Donald Trump and Populism

After a very intense election in the fall of 2016, Donald Trump was elected as the president of the United States of America.  Upon entering the Whitehouse President Trump made it very clear that he wanted to go down in the books as a populist President. Within the first few months of his Presidency he requested to have a painting of Andrew Jackson, a well known populist President, displayed in the oval office . Stephen Bannon, President Trumps Chief strategist  even claims that the speech given by Trump for his Inaugural address was very “ Jacksonian”. .

I believe that President Trump is truly a ‘President for the people’. I feel this way because Trump has given up so much to be the President, with almost zero benefits to himself. Trump refused to be paid to be the President, and more importantly he put his multi-billion dollar company on hold to serve his four years as President. I Believe that if Trump was a populist only for the rich, which he is claimed to be, that he would not have risked so much of his personal assets to help this country.

One of the major similarities between Trump and Jackson are their tempers. According to the New York Post, Andrew Jackson was said to be the kind of man who would carry a cane that would double as a sword, and he was not afraid to stab anyone with it. Trump's temper is similar to this . For example when dealing with the major threat of North Korea having nuclear capabilities, Trump shows that he has no problem using military force to 'deal with North Korea', as shown in this article from the New York Times.
